OBSG Series 03 - Reward of Obedience prt.1 – Genesis 28:10-22

Jacob had an encounter with GOD on his way to Haran to sojourn in the house of his mother’s brother.  He had a dream where he was told by GOD that HE will fulfill destiny with him, a promise GOD made with Abraham and also Isaac.
There are three important things I want us to observe from Jacob’s encounter at Bethel;
  • His obedience and step of faith brought him to the place of his destiny, where he had an encounter for the first time in his life with his creator.
  • He met GOD at a point where he was left alone, GOD was waiting for him at the exact place his life’s journey was to begin.
  • Jacob believed GOD and made a promise, even before his destiny was fulfilled
Jacob obeyed his father and mother, not only did he obey, he took a step of faith to go to a land he has never been, not knowing if his uncle was dead or still alive, but he was determined to do as he was instructed. Praise the LORD of HOST!
His Decision actually paid off, as he was met in a dream by GOD who promised to bless him and be with him all through his days.
10 Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. 12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. 14 Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”
16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”
18 Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. 19 And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, 21 so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God. 22 And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to you.”

Often times when we are given instructions, we tend not to follow these instructions and cause problems for ourselves in the process.  If Jacob had not obeyed his parents, he definitely would not have met GOD.
As Christians, let us learn to obey instructions from GOD, always follow HIS guidance and direction.  We noticed that GOD was waiting for Jacob at Bethel, HE did not wait for him in his father’s house or in the land where his parents dwell, HE was waiting for him in an entirely different environment.  All we have to do as believers is to obey instructions, take that step of faith and watch GOD step in for you.  Just like the case of the Samaritan woman by the well, JESUS was waiting for her just by the well, if she hadn’t gone there at that time, she would have missed her salvation (John4:4-26).  Moses saw a burning bush and went closer, that was how his destiny was changed forever, from a shepherd of flocks, to a prophet and a shepherd of GOD’s people (Exodus 3:1-15)…Praise the LORD of HOST!
Whatever it is that you have been instructed by GOD to do, but you have been afraid or feeling unsure all along, it is time for you to get up from that comfort zone and take a step of faith, GOD will not interfere in your life’s journey, until you give HIM reasons to.  Remember, it is until you obey, nothing will become clearer and know also, that HE is always waiting for at that point where you will be transformed and blessed.
Let’s not forget also, that Jacob believed GOD and made a promise to HIM, he entered into a covenant with GOD because even before he was blessed, he believed in the GOD of his fathers…Praise the LORD.
Always believe in GOD, regardless of your situation, it doesn’t matter what is in front of you, as long as GOD has promised, HE is always faithful and just to fulfill HIS promise.

Prayer: Our FATHER in heaven, grant us the strength and grace to obey your every instructions henceforth in JESUS NAME, Amen.

OBSG Series 07 – GOD’s Favour

Genesis 29:1-8  Jacob proceeded cheerfully in his journey, after the sweet communion he had with God at Beth-el. Providence brought him to the field where his uncle's flocks were to be watered. What is said of the care of the shepherds for their sheep, may remind us of the tender concern which our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, has for his flock the church; for he is the good Shepherd, that knows his sheep, and is known of them.  The stone at the well's mouth was to secure it; water was scarce, it was not there for every one's use: but separate interests should not take us from helping one another. When all the shepherds came together with their flocks, then, like loving neighbours, they watered their flocks together. The law of kindness in the tongue has a commanding power, Proverbs 31:26 . Jacob was civil to these strangers, and he found them civil to him. Same way, if we today’s Christians listen and obey GOD’s word, HE will definitely do more...

OBSG Series 02 - Esau’s Mistake – Genesis 28:6-9

Esau had married two Canaanite women, women who were from different backgrounds as him, without the fear of GOD in them.  They were idol worshipers. After seeing that his parents urged Jacob to go marry from his mother’s people, he realized his parents were really displeased with his choice.  Esau trying to fix what he had done, took Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son as a wife, because to him, marrying his cousin like Jacob was instructed, would fix his broken relationship with his parents but little did he know he was going about it the wrong way, fixing a mistake with another mistake. Genesis 28:6-9 6 Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Padan Aram to take himself a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Padan Aram. 8 Also Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not p...

OBSG Series 04 – Matthew 28:1-8

Matthew 28:1-8 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. 5 But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.” 8 So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word. JESUS said I will destroy this church and I will raise it up in 3 days… ( J...
